Beware of Chocolate!!!
If there is one important piece of information that you should forever etch in your mind to keep your pom alive for many years that should be to be very careful about chocolate… it is poison to your Pom!!! Yes, chocolates. Of course chocolate is enticing to kids and its wonderful to see their smiles the moment the mere subject of chocolate comes up, but you will not get the same reaction from Pomeranians simply because chemicals inside of some chocolates are pure poison to dogs.
The warning given on chocolate dog poisoning has actually surprised many dog lovers and very few Pom owners even know about this important information.
According to veterinary research, dogs love chocolates and giving them a small piece of it results in more craving. That means that your pom will jump at every chance to get a taste of any type of chocolate. They don’t know that certain types of this candy are more toxic than other kinds, and in small dogs like Pomeranians, this poison will travel through their system extremely quickly while larger amounts of chocolate can bring about epileptic seizures. What this translates to for Pomeranian is that it can kill them.
Why are chocolates lethal?
One of the ingredients of chocolate is Theobromine which is generally found in cocoa beans. Theobromine increases the need for urination and at the same time it also distresses the central nervous system and heart muscles. While amounts vary from case to case depending on the type of chocolate, it is the amount of Theobromine in the chocolate that can results in dog poisoning.
The Symptoms
Within a few hours of eating chocolate, your Pom may start to vomit. Other symptoms can include hyperactivity (which can be hard to identify with some more active Poms) and diarrhea. Within an hour, the amount of toxic substance absorbed will increase, this will result in an increase in heart rate increase for your pom. Poms normally have a very fast heartbeat and this increase causes too much stress on their little hearts. The result is restlessness, excessive panting, increased urination, muscle twitching, hyperactivity, and arrhythmia. Then these symptoms will invariably lead to seizures, muscle tremors, hypothermia, coma, and in extreme cases… death.
Be Prepared for an Accident
Every Pom owner should always be ready in case chocolate poisoning happens. Therefore, the knowledge of basic first aid and things to do in an emergency is vital.
First of all, do not panic and get yourself educated. The book Pomeranian Training Secrets is a great source of information for getting started. Easy first-aid treatment when your dog is hit with chocolate poisoning is to immediately take the chocolate away before the theobromine has a chance to circulate. Induce vomiting if its already been ingested and administer a charcoal slurry. The sooner this is done the less effect the poison will have.
To induce vomiting, drop three percent of hydrogen peroxide in your Pom’s mouth every 15 minutes until it vomits. Alternatively, use Ipecac Syrup. There is no need for a doctor prescription when buying this medicine. It is affordable and may be stored for a few years.
If you see that the chocolate poisoning has affected your Pomeranian, immediately take your pet to a veterinarian for medical care.
Always be careful with foods that you feed your Pom. Also teach your kids and the rest of the family members and friends about chocolate poisoning so they can also share this information with other dog-owner families and friends.
